Program Overview
The Over 50s Employability Support Learning Program is designed to build the knowledge and confidence of employability professionals who support people aged 50 and above on their journey back into work. While this group brings a wealth of life and work experience, they often face distinct challenges that require tailored, person-centred support.
This practical and insightful program explores the range of barriers that may affect older job seekers, including health considerations, changing family or caring responsibilities, digital exclusion, and age-related bias. It equips practitioners with the understanding and tools needed to provide support that reflects the individual’s circumstances, strengths, and ambitions.
By completing this learning, practitioners will be better able to challenge stereotypes, increase motivation, and offer meaningful pathways into sustainable employment for people over 50.
Recognition
Learners who complete the program will receive a Certificate of Achievement and Digital Badge from the IEP as recognition of the skills and knowledge gained.
Structure and Timings
Over 50s Employability Support Accredited Learning is an e-Learning program. All learning takes place online through our LMS and provides an ideal CPD opportunity for members wishing to increase their knowledge and learning.
Subjects Covered
Understanding Over 50s and Employment
Over 50s make up a third of the workforce – but those who fall out of work are at an increased risk of long-term unemployment. In the past, employment support has not worked well for this group. This module will help you understand some of the facts and statistics around unemployment for the over 50s, and explore the impact of challenges and barriers facing this group. In future modules we will outline ways in which you can appropriately support the over 50s on your caseload into suitable employment.
Skills Support for Over 50s
This module builds on what you have learnt in the previous module about the challenges facing over 50 participants. It will help you understand the barriers over 50s face in seeking work, including confidence, qualifications, and access to training. It will suggest ways you might help over 50s on your caseload in overcoming these barriers.
Over 50s and Employers
This module explains how older workers may feel they are disadvantaged in the recruitment process, from the language used in recruitment adverts to discrimination at interview stage. It will also look at what makes good employment for over 50s, so if you are engaging with employers, you can help them understand what this age group needs.
Over 50s Common Challenges
Over 50s are likely to have additional challenges which will impact on job searching and employment opportunities. In this module we explore these challenges, in particular the common themes of health, caring, and financial need. We also explore how to support people who are experiencing these issues and how to appropriately signpost to support services.
